Worrying occurance
I had a bit of a worrying occurance yesterday. I was hoovering the carpet in my car (something VERY infrequent I must add!), and then, when I came out, all of a sudden, I started hearing very loud, rustling sounds through my CI implant. It actually sounded similar to the sound one gets when one moves something against a microphone, and this way I realised it was my hair against the microphone. Uhoh, I thought, something is wrong here. I don't normally hear my hair against the mike. Moving along I heard the movement of my specs arms against the headphone too. Worrying me now. My neighbour was using his hoover too, and it sounded muted, strange. I turned my speech processor off, and turned it on again. The rustling disappeared, but sound still sounded muffled. I stifled the feeling of panic and went upstairs, and spoke to Mandy. She sounded quite faint. I tried using the plug in cable from the TV, and that sounded ok, so I assumed it's something wrong with the microphone.
So, I unplugged the headpiece from the speech processor, removed the microphone cover, and dusted off both the inside as well as the mike cover itself. I put everything back together, and, it was working! Phew!
Moral of the story - even though speech processors are pretty hardy, you really must take care of them. Better, take them off when doing dirty work!

Ivan,
I was going to say replace the cover. But as I was finishing your story I see you did that. My old hearing aid did that a lot, it is a crapy feeling, and a GREAT feeling when you figure out the problem. Glad it worked out.
They gave me a bunch of those covers and said to replace them every 3-4 months, and to throw the old ones out.
P.S Get a haircut! lol......I hear myself scratching my head, makes me laugh that I can hear that now. I also just talked to my mother inlaw on the phone, understood a lot, I'm loving this so far.
Take care,
Billy
It was a bit worrying Billy.... especially since I'm in Malta and my CI programme is in the UK - almost 2000 miles away. Luckily I managed to get it sorted!
As to the haircut - It's actually quite short :) My hair is so curly that I'd end up with an afro if I didn't cut it short - in fact, when I had the op I had a crew cut because I knew that if I didn't wash it for 10 days (ugh) I'd end up with a birds nest!
I had a similar situation...went nuts trying to figure it out. Replaced everything...t-mic, battery, processor and it turned out the "rushing" noise was the laptop fan.
Oh yea...like Billy said...get a haircut!! LOL!
