Mobile phones

About 2 weeks ago, I went fishing with a friend. Since I didn't know where his boat is berthed, I smsed him to tell him I'd arrived (at the unearthly hour of 515am) in the meeting point we'd agreed. He didn't reply so I rang on his mobile and hung up. Shortly after that, I heard the phone ring. I hesitated (since I'd not used a mobile phone for conversations) and then muttered, what the hell.. and answered it. And.. for some reason, it was clear as a bell. I arranged to meet my friend, Mark, and that was that! I've been using my mobile quite frequently recently. It's not always clear, I don't always understand everything, but just imagine, just a year ago I was quivering in my boots, waiting for my operation, not understanding a thing from my poor, destroyed ears!

Wow!!!!!! That's awesome!! I've done that...sent a text message, and, getting no answer, calling just to make the phone ring (and hopefully, make the receiver realize I've sent a text). They always do just what your friend did...call back. Unfortunately, I can't even hear on that phone yet, let alone comprehend...but I think your progress is amazing!! Way to go!!
I need to start seriously working on my comprehension. I have been slacking off a bit...I think I need a new map...I should be working harder instead of falling off, though. Perhaps I should play my Harry Potter audiobook for listening practice? :D

Ivan,

I know that feeling all too well. . .should I answer or not. . . it depends on who is on the caller ID. If I don't answer and they leave a voice mail, I listen to the voice mail over and over and over again until I get it. Good practice, especially with voices that I am not familiar with.

You're doing great!

Marvelous feeling, huh? :)

I felt the same way when I talked to a few strangers these days. Without help!

Jennifer - I do listen to audiobooks and read them at the same time. The Harry Potter one is a long wait in our library, so I am doing others, but if you can get a hold of HP, do it!

Hi Jennifer - I must admit that if a stranger called on my mobile, I'd hang up. It's ok with friends and family, but not strangers!

Laurie - well, I used to be like that with the phone, but I guess now I'm confident on the phone and can just pick up the phone and answer without a thought - even though, I'm ashamed to say, I don't really know how to use my phone at work it's got so many bits and stuff attached to it!

Yana - you're really doing well aren't you :) Worth it, wasn't it?! You've still got a long way to go - but see this in a positive way :)

Thats awesome! I am still a little apprehensive about using the phone so I haven't even tried yet. Judging from listening to the answering machine, I'll probably get about 25% of the conversation. Keep up the great work!

Sam, have you used the t-coil? Using the normal mike on my speech processor has mixed results depending on the phone.

I understand your hesitancy as it's pretty difficult - but maybe you can try with family and friends first.

Yeah Ivan, that is a great story. Happy for you. I use it to talk to my wife, I do good with her, but have not really tried anyone else, way too nervous. I guess after years and years of no phone, we all become accustomed with not using it. I did call my brother, a friend, and my Mom, did ok, but never called them again, don't know why, nerves is my only answer:)

I tried a few relatives today. I called their home phones with my cell phone. Did great. Then I called a friend on her cell phone - big failure... Go figure. On the cell I use T coil with neck loop.

That's really good news Yana! I never bothered with a neck coil - it's too fiddly. By the time you've put it on and you've got the t coil up and running whoever it is has hung up!

It is a pain, but until I buy a cell phone compatible with T coils I have to use the neckloop or I can't hear anything...
